As developers, we've naturally discussed adding chat to the mosaic. Some of us were all for it, some were against.

The proponents argued that ...

* chat would allow players to easily communicate and thus coordinate their artistic collaborations.

The opposition stated that adding chat ...

* takes away from the country and age independent nature of TheBroth - it would be no longer a Global Mosaic, and possibly disadvantage those that don't speak English.
* may allow obscene language, and thus TheBroth is no longer safe for kids.
* allows for visitors to form alliances and gang up on others, thus circumventing or abusing the Karma system.
* distracts from the main objective of TheBroth, which is dragging tiles.

As you can see from this list, quite a few arguments speak against adding a chat feature. So... what is your opinion?

I think there should be a chat on/off button in all rooms so that users can ignore others if they are being offensive. And in 'owned' rooms, the owners should be able to disable chat altogether if wished. Thank you for your time and keep up the good work!

Chat is available only to registered users.

Anyone who abuses the privileges that come with being a registered user, and/or violates the terms of service that they agreed on when they signed up, shall be banned from TheBroth.

When you encounter a registered user being abusive on chat, or otherwise disruptive, please report them using our contact form.

This is exactly what happens (at least in my experience), and is very helpful.

I've seen people from quite a few different countries speaking English just fine. Besides, not everyone needs to discuss what the next collaboration is going to be; the "English-speakers" can initiate it and then the rest will get an idea as to what they're doing and help.

People can easily put obsene language in the artwork itself; there is no need to do it in the chat box. Also, so far I have never seen anyone use obscene language in the chat. (Maybe we can have a rule that says that if anyone uses obscene language then the other users in the room are obligated to give them a negative vote.) Even if people did curse a lot in the chat area, it's still better than doing it with the tiles!

I haven't seen this happen yet. I suppose it may be useful in instances where someone says, "Hey everyone, please give this person a negative vote so that we can kick him out of the room; he/she is being very destructive to our artwork!".

Sometimes I'm not in the mood to drag tiles, I just want to chat. Chatting is useful for deciding what artwork to work on, encouraging/complimenting the others, etc. It doesn't really hinder the main objective of the broth in my opinion.

It's good to help work together and discuss any major changes to the current mosiac. I use it to sometimes say, hmm don't you think we should have the tree further to the left? As one example.

I am stunned by the fact that I am sharing a creative process with people from ALL over the world...to be able to talk to them so easily blows me away. This is a great site.

i've also met MANY ppl who speak english, but a few dont, or they rather speak in another language, which can become annoying and form groups. but its also fun to talk to ppl who are learning english, and then you get to learn somethingin their language.

but, i am all FOR the chat feature, despite its bad aspects, it has far more good aspects.

I've spoken to a few people who have said the chat improves their English, also it's nice to learn new words in other languages Wink

I agree with all of this. I do think that chat is a neat feature, not only do you get to discuss your next artistic picture, but you're able to communicate with others where there are flaws in the picture or what would look better, etc.

It is also a neat feature because you get to meet people of different ages (lately I've been meeting underaged people), backgrounds, races, and of different locations around the world. I was talking to some people from London the other day and some of the words they used were really interesting to read. It teaches you about different cultures and language in different parts of the world.

I also think that you get to know the people that you frequently work with. You not only know them as great artists, but as fellow peers and possible Brother friends. It's a lot of fun, and I for one am for having the Chat feature!

This doesn't make sense, if someone is annoying let them know or exile them. Also, you don't have to be in that particular room with them. PM them if you have to.

There are things we couldn't possibly have made without the chat feature. You can discuss everything, down to the last detail. It definitely improves the quality of collaborated artworks.
