I just changed my Avatar using Adobe Photoshop to create it.
I set the size to 80x80 Pixels.
On completion I saved as Jpeg and chose the 'small file' option.
BUT...I couldn't import it into broth as an avatar because the file size came out around 26Mb!!!
So I imported into paint and did nothing except save as Jpeg.
This time the file was 13Mb????
If your expecting me to explain why this happened...well I don't know.
It was like....woooosh what the heck was that. |

All you need to make all kind of avatars (ie animated or non animated) is GIMP(ITS FREEEEEE)
http://gimp-win.sourceforge.net/ For windows
http://www.gimp.org/
its nearest free thing to adobe photoshop
The file's too large. Try the websites that GOGO posted in another topic. |

Firstly, you mean kilobytes (kb), right?
I think it has to do with the compression level and image optimization. When using "Save" or "Save As" Photoshop doesn't optimize your file for the internet very well.
When I save images for the internet on Photoshop, I use "Save for Web". It opens up your image in up to 4 split windows and you can tweak and compare the save settings to optimize the image for both resolution and file size.
General rule of thumb, if it's a photo image, save it as a jpg, a medium compression level (~30-45) is sufficient in most cases, IMO. If it's a graphical image, save it as a gif, 16-64 colours is enough for most graphical images (again, IMO).
For a 80x80 pixel image, you should be able to get the file size down to under 4 kb and keep it looking good. Example, my avatar (a jpg) is 2433 bytes (2.433 kb). |

Freaky,
Yes Yes ...all right ..I meant Kb...(oops!)
Thank you for the info...
I shall try those 'save for web' options.
I tend to use AP for photography (a hobby) and so I was always more concerned about picture quality than file size, so I am greatful for the new(for me)information.
Cheers...Terry |

Thanks for the Info Missy.
I've actually got GIMP, but I have been using Adobe for (a lot of) years so I tend to do just about everything on it even if it isn't always the most suitable.
Something about 'Old Dogs' and 'New Tricks'....lol
Thanks again. |

one thing i have noticed that in paint the jpeg compression gives a poor and i mean POooR output.
so just "save as" your image in *.jpg format in photoshop itself ....
in GIMP however it lets u decide the quality output you can choose it to be 100% or 1% up to you..... |

I believe that's what BigTel did at first and got a 26kb sized image.

Actually, Photoshop's "Save As" does let you choose the quality of the output from 0 to 12. It's "Save for Web" also allows for quality output of 0 to 100% (for jpgs).
I've tried GIMP before briefly, but I didn't like it (for one thing, the jpg compression was better on Photoshop). It's still a very good piece of software, especially for a freebie, but I much prefer Photoshop, but to each his/her own. |
