Developers: Of course we understand that running thebroth costs money and that the ads are necessary. Is it your goal to reduce the need for and eventually get rid of advertisements on thebroth? I'm mostly talking about getting sponsors for the contests.

Members:What do you think about the ads? Are they tolerable? Please don't start an argument with the developers, though.

Go for it, discuss Cool

I don't get ads Cool but some types of adds really annoy me, popup ads and ads that make noises, for example.

No, this is not our goal. If anything, there'll be more advertising - yet it will be out of the way of the normal operation of TheBroth. We're redesigning the site to allow for ads and cool features to co-exist. So far the response to our site overhaul has been very positive. Less scrolling, better grouping, cool features. Ads are necessary, and in my opinion, a small price to pay for an otherwise completely free site.

We have already some sponsors for the contests lined up, however, please note, they pay us NOTHING. They just provide the prizes for the winners.

well with these new ads and banners would you consider getting rid of that stupid google adsense. I remember you saying they don't pay nearly enough anyways and those are the most annoying at least to me because it's so easy to click on accident and pull up some stupid site about some tiles.

oh and i do find it funny that your new ads are so anti-george bush. I can't deny I stop and knock him out as I'm passing through the site.

When you say more advertising I do hope it doesn't get out of hand...Some sites are so filled with those things the site won't even load properly.

Sorry, no.

Indeed. They don't pay nearly enough to even pay for the hosting, leave alone the salaries of five full-time TheBroth staff.

We have only limited influence on the ad content. With our advertising providers, we're able to filter out things we consider inappropriate content (ads for alcohol, tobacco, adult) and annoying ad types (those with sound, expanding ones, popup or popunders openers...). We'll do our best to keep things at reasonable levels.

I certainly hope that too and we'll do our best to find a workable compromise. Like any other free site (youtube, myspace, etc) our business model is based on advertising, but obviously this will only provide any significant revenue once we have massive traffic.

Speaking of which, our publicity campaign and all the goodies with it (contests etc) will start soon. We'll create some banners and buttons and stuff. Volunteers are encouraged to plaster them all over the internet (no spamming please) Smile

I don't mind the advertising so much. You tend to get used to it.

But some of those "new smileys" are kinda creeping me out. I think maybe the lipstick one is flirting with me.

Help me!

The "annoying" ads (flashing etc) are ads of our second ad provider. We're in the process of completely removing them and displaying Google ads instead if our primary ad provider is out of inventory.

As of today, we hope to have eliminated those "annoying" ads. It will show Google Adsense ads instead.

For those living in the US, you're likely to see the best ads, meaning ads that don't flash and make noises and what not - but simply inform you of quite interesting propositions. Just as ads should be - informative, but not too intrusive.

Those in other countries may see Google ads instead, and they may not be quite as useful for you. But at least we stopped the flashing, the noises, and the "you've won!!" messages...

Now if you still want us to create any revenue, I won't hesitate to point you towards our donation page:
