Server upgrades - please expect downtime

June 10th, 2007 in Developer Diary

TheBroth server gets more RAM and some software updates. During the 24-48 hours, expect intermittent outages where TheBroth is not accessible.

There’s exciting new features in development but they require that the server is updated. We’ll have 2 more GB of RAM in it, and we’ll install a number of software components that are essential for future growth and scaling of the service.

These upgrades are performed by our hosting partner and we don’t have control when exactly the downtime will occur or how long it will take exactly. From experience, I would expect each downtime to not last longer than one hour. I expect 2-3 of these outages in the coming days.

We won’t know for sure whether the software upgrades will be compatible with the existing code on TheBroth. These things are always difficult to predict, but we’ll do our best to get it all fixed up as bugs rear their ugly heads.

Please keep us informed if you find things aren’t working right by posting in the bug reports forum - let’s hope that forum software keeps working :-)

We seem to have problem with the kernel properly recognizing the extra RAM. There’ll be a few more reboots in the next 24 hours. I apologize for the downtime.

Update: The RAM was indeed faulty. It has now been replaced and all is good. My apologies for the repeated outages.

We’re still not quite there in terms of software upgrades, so there’s going to be some more problems but we’re working on it and hopefully soon have it all sorted out.
