What makes TheBroth different
December 5th, 2006 in Developer Diary · By Markus WeichselbaumHow is TheBroth different from other sites? How does it compare to myspace.com, youtube.com or flickr.com? Read to find out what’s similar, what’s different, and what’s so special about TheBroth!
How is TheBroth different from other sites, such as myspace.com, youtube.com or flickr.com?
Myspace.com is primarily a social networking site. Users can express themselves by customising the look of their profile. Users can add each other to their friends list. There are forums and chat, and users can upload music and videos. The main reason for being on myspace is to either create or customize your profile or browse other users’ profiles.
Youtube.com is a video sharing site. Youtube makes it easy for users to upload their own videos and subscribe to others. Users can comment on uploaded videos. Although video technology is increasingly becoming more affordable and easier to use, youtube is mostly a service provided by a few with the talent and/or technical resources to create content, and the majority of youtube visitors passively watches that content. As TheBroth developers, we also use Youtube to stream our videos. It’s a great site for that purpose.
Flickr.com is a photo sharing site. Comprising mostly photographs, users can upload their images and create photo albums and galleries. Others can comment on these images. Flickr allows the formation of groups where group members can discuss topics. Similar to myspace and youtube, flickr.com offers a friend system, here called “contacts”.
Similarities and differentiation
Similar to the above sites (and they are all really cool!), TheBroth features forums, user blogs, profiles, friends system, chat, galleries, commenting and tagging.
In contrast to the above sites, TheBroth is geared towards active participation by all its users, instead of dividing them into content producers and consumers. Central to TheBroth is the creative self-expression using visual arts, either via solo artworks or via simultaneous collaboration.
The attractiveness of TheBroth stems from the immediacy and accessibility of this new mosaic-like artform. People of all ages and artistic talent can have instant fun, be it with 5-minute lunchtime doodles or by creating amazingly detailed artworks, solo or in collaboration.
At TheBroth, it isn’t possible to submit media such as photos, mp3s and videos made by others. As a visual medium that transcends language barriers, TheBroth creates a unique egality amongst all users and bridges the gap between continents, cultures and languages, offering a compelling reason to be online with others at the same time, for communication, collaboration, and instant and rewarding creativity.
So - why do YOU like TheBroth? :-)
