   When Maaui was born his mother thought he was dead and put his body out at sea. The Sky God found him and took him up to heaven and told Maaui about his family when he grew up. Maaui went to find his family on earth, when he did his brothers soon got tired of him since his mother never gave him work to do. One day he hid in their canoe determined to show them he wasn't lazy. When his brothers found him they wanted to carry him back but Maaui promised them a great catch. Soon a huge fish came at Maaui's line. Maaui told his brothers to hold the fish steady while he gave the Sky God thanks but his brothers got impatient and tried to cut up the fish. The fish began to wriggle fiercely in the water. That is why New Zealand is so mountainous today. The Sky God punished the jealous brothers and made a new country for Maaui to live in!!!
