    Greek mythology: Tantalus

Tantalus was a man who was adored by the gods. Even so, he cheated them and gave their secrets away. As a punishment the gods sent him to the Tartar. He had to "stand in a pool of water beneath a fruit tree with low branches. Whenever he reached for the fruit, the branches raised his intended meal from his grasp. Whenever he bent down to get a drink, the water receded before he could get any. [Wiki]"

Sorry for using Wiki but they described it better than I would do.

what's the black stuff on his back?

It's a metaphor for his captivity: the punishment is irreversible and eternal. The black stuff is a kind of symbolic cuffs.

Very awesome. The pupil-less eye kind of freaks me out but the whole thing is still very well made. Wonderful.
